Overview
Roller cones on the bit face break the rock by rolling and crushing, while compressed air injected into the drill pipe lifts water and cuttings up the inside of the string. The hole bottom is cleared continuously, so the cones keep working on fresh rock.
It is the tool of choice where large-diameter piles are socketed into weathered rock and the contractor runs a reverse-circulation set-up.
